How to do the Smith Machine Calf Raise
- Stand with the bar across your upper back, feet on a block.
- Place the balls of your feet on the block with your heels hanging off.
- Lower your heels as far as comfortable for a full stretch, then rise onto your toes.
- Fully extend your ankles at the top, briefly holding the position.
Full technique — 7 steps
- Set the smith bar across your upper traps and stand on a calf block or plate.
- Place the balls of your feet on the edge with heels hanging freely below.
- Unrack the bar, stand tall, and keep your knees slightly unlocked throughout the set.
- Lower your heels as far as comfortable to reach a full calf stretch at the bottom.
- Drive through the balls of your feet and rise onto your toes as high as possible.
- Hold the top briefly without bouncing or shifting forward.
- Lower back down under control until your heels drop below the platform again.

- Bouncing out of the bottom
