Resistance Band Lateral Raise

A band shoulder isolation exercise targeting the lateral delts. Useful for building side-delt size with joint-friendly resistance and minimal equipment.

How to do the Resistance Band Lateral Raise

  1. Stand on the band's middle, feet hip-width apart, handles at your sides.
  2. Keep your back straight and elbows slightly bent, palms facing inward.
  3. Raise your arms out to the sides, keeping your wrists below your elbows.
  4. Continue until your upper arms are near shoulder height, avoiding shrugging.
  5. Slowly lower your arms back down to your starting position.
Full technique — 6 steps
  1. Stand on the middle of the band with feet about hip width and handles at your sides.
  2. Set a tall torso with a slight bend in your elbows and palms facing inward.
  3. Start with arms just in front of your thighs and shoulders kept down away from your ears.
  4. Raise both arms out to the sides, keeping your wrists below your elbows as band tension increases.
  5. Lift until your upper arms reach roughly shoulder height without turning it into a shrug.
  6. Lower the handles back to your sides along the same path until the band slackens.

Common mistakes

  • Shrugging into the top position
  • Swinging the torso for momentum
  • Turning it into a front raise
  • Bending and straightening the elbows
  • Lifting well above shoulder height

Form cues

  • Keep wrists below elbows
  • Keep shoulders down
  • Stop at shoulder height
  • Slight elbow bend, fixed angle
