How to do the Kettlebell Deadlift

  1. Stand with your feet hip-width apart, placing the kettlebell between your feet.
  2. Push your hips back and bend your knees to grip the kettlebell, keeping your back straight.
  3. Tighten your stomach, push through your whole foot, and stand up straight.
  4. Lower the kettlebell by sending your hips back first, then bending your knees.
  5. Return the kettlebell to the floor, feeling it between your feet again.
Full technique — 7 steps
  1. Stand with feet about hip to shoulder width and the kettlebell between your arches.
  2. Push your hips back and bend your knees enough to reach the handle.
  3. Grip the kettlebell with both hands and set your spine neutral with shoulders down and back.
  4. Tighten your stomach and feel pressure through your whole foot before initiating the lift.
  5. Push through your whole foot and extend your hips and knees together to stand tall.
  6. Finish upright with the kettlebell hanging under your shoulders and hips fully extended.
  7. Lower by sending your hips back first, then bend your knees to return the kettlebell to the floor.

Common mistakes

  • Squatting the weight up
  • Rounding through the lower back
  • Letting the kettlebell drift forward
  • Hyperextending at the top
